An Impressive Pair of Library Armchairs in the High Victorian Manner

Constructed in rosewood, rising from exuberantly carved swept legs with ball and claw feet, with a conjoined carved apron; the part upholstered arms with stiff leaf carved terminals with shaped dolphin supports; the show wood frame enclosing the upholstered seats and backs. England. Circa 1850.

Provenance: The Furniture section of the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 provided many of the finest examples of High Victorian design; The Art Journal Catalogue illustrates a ‘State Chair’ of very similar form to our chairs, made by M.Jancowski of York.
