A Pair of Finely Carved Black Forest Statues of Cattle Firmly Attributed to Johann Huggler of Brienz
Dimensions: H: 13.5 in / 34 cm W: 17.5 in / 44 cm D: 7 in / 17 cm The excellently grained walnut used in both carvings has acquired a deep patination: the naturalistically carved elliptical form bases support a Cow and a Bull, both executed with considerable skill in the anatomical details, and with sharply defined musculature.
Brienz, Circa 1870
Literature: Other very similar statues by Huggler are shown on pp83-85 of the definitive work on the subject, ‘Swiss Carvings, The Art of the Black Forest’ by Arenski, Daniels and Daniels, published by the Antique Collectors Club, 2005.
