A Robust Pair of George IV Mahogany Bergere Library Armchairs
H: 41.5 in / 105 cm W: 23 in / 58.5 cm D: 27 in / 67 cm
Using the designs illustrated in George Smith’s design manual of 1826, with the restrained usage of Classical motifs, yet incorporating a muscular feeling, the Armchairs are constructed of well figured and patinated Mahogany, sitting on ring turned tapering legs with the original brass caps and castors, reeded seat frames, the scrolled arms with roundels, lappeting and palmette decoration a la Greque, the square shaped caned back surmounted with a strong swept cresting. The squab cushions are of shaded leather hide, masking the original caned seat and backs. Circa 1825.
