An Incredibly Rare Regency-Period Ebony Coffer
Mounted with Florentine Pietra Dura Panels
Attributed to Robert Hume Jr
Constructed in ebony incorporating pietra dura panels and richly dressed with gilt bronze mounts including a pierced acanthus rinceaux base with scrolling feet below a ribbon-bound band of berried laurel and central foliate-mounted shells; the coffer having canted corners with female caryatids in classical dress and Corinthian capitals above; the ebony-veneered sides adorned with radiant ormolu lion mask handles; the front and back adorned with suspended ormolu trophies of harvest bounty with cascading ribbons flanking a rectangular hardstone still-life panel depicting fruits and butterflies incorporating lapis lazuli, malachite, vert de mer, as well as amber with other marbles and semi-precious stones all worked in high relief; the lid executed in a conforming manner of the highest standard, ebony-veneered with gilt bronze foliate clasps at each corner and central foliate-mounted cabochons interspersed with running guilloches and berried leaves; the top with a central female masks with an acanthus heurtoir and foliate-mounted shell. With a recent crimson silk-lined interior.
