A Symbolic Skeleton Clock from the French Directoire Period

A rectangular Carrara marble base on bronze toupie feet with knurled decoration supports an ormolu 'arc-de-ciel', with the round clock above, hung with garlands. The white enamel dial, set in a pierced ormolu frame, shows the hours in Roman numerals and is topped by an Imperial Eagle finial flanked by garlands. The eight-day, two-train movement with silk suspension strikes on a bell.
French, circa 1800

Kjellberg, Pierre. Encyclopédie de la pendule française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle. Paris: Éd. de l'Amateur, 2005, p. 320 shows similar clocks.
