A Rare Fauteuil de Bureau
In the Louis XV Style
By François Linke

This armchair of beautifully drawn proportions is made of purpleheart and mounted with fine hand-chased, fire-gilded bronze. A bearded ormolu mask crowns the upholstered, shaped backrest, and the open scrolled arms meet the padded seat. The chair stands on curved cabriole legs with ormolu sabots cast with foliage and with stylized ormolu acanthus at the knees, one of which is signed ‘F. Linke.’

According to Christopher Payne, furniture historian and author of the definitive volume on François Linke, this armchair is a variation of index no. 840 & no. 1333. Both iterations are based on the same frame design and were finished with varying ormolu mounts.
