By Heinrich Lossow (1843-1897)
Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in a carved giltwood frame.
German, second half of the 19th century
Heinrich Lossow (1843-1897) was an academically trained German painter, best known today for his opulent painting style and his published illustrations. The son of a sculptor, Lossow studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and then took a Grand Tour through France and Italy to refine his style. His paintings show his technical skill in their realism and his inventiveness in the imagined genre scenes they depict. He later served as curator at Schlessheim Palace.
