A Pair of Mahogany Chippendale Style Armchairs
Based on Thomas Chippendale's original design from 1753 for 'French Chairs,' the armchairs on cabriole carved legs terminating in ball and claw feet, with rectangular stuffed seats, the backrests of serpentine outline, carved with rococo ornament, C-scrolled acanthus designs and a central cartouche at the apex, each chair having outswept padded armrests with scrolled and acanthus clasped supports.

Perhaps the most influential cabinetmaker of all time, Thomas Chippendale started publishing his famous book of designs in 1754, which spread his new furniture styles across all of England and beyond its borders throughout Europe and America. During the second half of the 19th century, roughly a century after the designer's death, his designs gained popularity again and chairs such as the present pair were produced.
