It is constructed in simulated goncalo alves, rising from addorsed caster shod saber legs decorated with finely carved Greco-Roman palmettes, with similar tablets over; the back rest of ‘dog leg’ form with reeding and further conforming carving, and a swept back. The armrail is of molded shape, with a scrolled terminal. The foot rest is an incurved scroll, decorated with further reeding. Circa 1815.
Clifford Musgrave’s ‘Regency Furniture’ published London 1961 shows a chaise longue of very similar conception. The design also appears in the 1802 edition of the ‘Cabinet Makers’ London Book of Prices’.
