A Large Black Forest Mantel Clock
Carved from linden wood and fitted with a two-train, 8-day striking clock, it stands on a shaped serpentine base with a molded edge. The naturalistic setting of rockwork, tree branches, leaves and berries includes two retrievers and the day's bag. Above the clock, a huntsman dressed for stalking surveys the scene. Brienz, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland Brienz, in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland was remarked upon in Baedeker’s Travel Guide, as having a population of 2400, of whom 600 persons were employed as woodcarvers, to supply the tourist trade to Switzerland with mementos of the tour. A museum devoted entirely to the art of wood carving may be visited today.
