A Magnificent Pair of Monumental Vases
in the Neo-Renaissance Manner

Constructed in alabaster which has been masterfully carved; rising from step-moulded rectangular plinths, supporting handled vases of Ancient amphora shape, carved with vine leaves, grapes, cascading foliates, and a rendition of the famous Doves of Pliny depicting doves perched on a bird bath. The interior fitted with a light.
Italian, Circa 1870

The beauty of the alabaster is celebrated with these fantastic vases, accentuated when they are backlit and showing the warmth, delightful swirls, and character of the stone.

The distinctive shape is that of the Roman Amphora, a large vessel with two handles used for storing and transporting wine in Classical Antiquity. The central design of the vases also dates to Ancient Rome and is based on the mosaic floor discovered at Emperor Hadrian's Villa.
