A Handsome Partner's Desk
After the Chippendale Design

Made from fine mahogany, with finely cast brass hardware, the desk supported on rolling casters hidden under the thumbnail moulded plinth, each pedestal with incurved corners housing a bank of four graduated drawers with stiff-leaf carving and scrolling brass handles, the other side of the desk with large panelled doors with arched tops enclosing shelved cupboards; the writing surface above the frieze drawer inset with a maroon and gilt-tooled leather.
English, circa 1910

An understated and elegant desk originally designed in the mid-18th century to stand at the centre of a grand library, it is the fashionable Rococo details such as the C-scrolled handles and the applied carving that single-out this desk as a fine Chippendale style example. The gilt-tooled leather adds a touch of luxury.

The design was first published in Chippendale's famous book of designs, appearing as plate LXXVII in his third edition of 1762.
