An Important Pair of Stately Console Tables
In the Louis XVI Manner

Constructed in carved and gilded wood; rising from four stop-fluted legs adorned with lotus bud forms and terminating in ionic capitals; having conjoining stylised 'X' form entretoises carved with a guilloche pattern; having centrally situated twin-handled urns; the aprons with scrolling foliate rinceaux and interspersed with paterae, and having arc-en-arbalette shaped Calacatta marble thumbnail-edged platforms. Stamped "B Stern / Bruxelles."

A similar giltwood carved table, by the famous cabinetmaker Guillaume Grohé, with guilloche-carved stretchers and a twin-handled vase finial, dating to the mid-nineteenth century, is today in the Château de Chantilly, former home of the French King's son the Duc d'Aumale who was considered one of France's most important collectors and tastemakers.
