A Monumental Pair of Chippendale Style Mirrors

The design of these giltwood mirrors draws inspiration from the new George III style first popularized by Matthias Lock in his A New Book of Ornaments of 1752. However, the principal inspiration is undoubtedly drawn from Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, published between 1754-62, plate CLXIX. Adorned with borders featuring flowers, birds, and acanthus-scrolls, the 'Chinese' Chippendale style was promoted by the greatest London makers of the 18th century, and enjoyed a resurgence during the 19th century.

Of hand-carved giltwood, the surface gently patinated revealing the warm hue of the bole beneath the gold leaf, the mirrors composed of a series of rectangular and shaped glass plates, housed within elaborate carved frames incorporating C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, pagoda-style pediments, leafy branches, trailing 'icicles,' palm stems, pendant floral garlands, and each mirror with a pair of mythical Ho-Ho birds with their wings outstretched.
