A Matched Pair of Oak Tripod Tables
Attributed to Gillows
- Attributed to esteemed 19th-century cabinet-maker Gillows, a documented design by the firm.
- Exquisite craftsmanship with carved oak, cabriole tripod legs, and detailed pie crust moulded edges
- Designed for versatility, these tables are both functional and decorative
Carved from native English oak, each table having cabriole tripod legs with pad feet, the clusters of tri-columns converging with the waisted, knop turned and tapering stem which supports the serpentine rectangular tops with pie crust moulded edges.
English, circa 1825
Designed by Gillows to support vases of flowers, these tables are versions of a model first shown in 1822 (Estimate Sketch Books folio 3170). The 1822 sketch is notable for being the first early 19th century Gillows Lancaster design clearly based on a mid-18th century tripod table.
Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, London, 2008, vol. II, p. 97-98, discussing and illustrating this model and its variants.
