A Pair of Coromandel and Boulle Marquetry Cabinets
Attributed to Town & Emanuel
Using the exotic coromandel wood to great effect, in combination with ormolu mounts; one cabinet inlaid with 'première partie' Boulle marquetry of tortoiseshell and brass, while the other is adorned with the corresponding 'contre partie' marquetry. Each cabinet on a brass-inlaid plinth, the doors with glass panels opening to reveal a lined and shelved interior, with a frieze drawer above and brecciated marble top.
English, circa 1840
The 1849 catalogue of Town & Emanuel's dispersal sale lists no.801 as "a pair of pedestal pier cabinets, with glass doors, and borders of buhl on tortoiseshell, with or-moulu mouldings, the inside covered with crimson velvet," possibly a reference to the cabinets with Butchoff.

Town & Emanuel (fl.1830-1849)
Town and Emanuel, located at 103 New Bond Street in London, were renowned furniture makers and suppliers active from around 1830 to 1849. They specialized in creating French Louis XIV and Louis XV style furniture using materials like kingwood, satinwood, often with ormolu mounts. A notable example is a writing table from around 1836, at Burghley House. This style of furniture, known as French Transitional, was highly fashionable in British society and attracted collectors, the British nobility, and members of the Royal family including Queen Adelaide. Apart from furniture, Town and Emanuel also dealt in curiosities, antiques, and imported items. They were recognized as manufacturers of Boulle, marquetry and carved furniture. Their trade label proudly states the distinction of being appointed by Her Majesty.
