The Florentine Singer
By Paul Dubois

Cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne

The figure cast from patinated bronze, wearing 15th century historic costume, holding a mandolin, mouth agape in mid-song, raised on a circular base signed ‘P. Dubois 1865’ and ‘F. Barbedienne Fondeur.’
French, circa 1890

The plaster model of the ‘chanteur florentin’ was presented at the Salon in 1865, earning Dubois the medal of honour. It is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Troyes.
A silvered bronze example, also cast by Barbedienne, was exhibited during the World Exhibition of 1867 and is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

This current bronze version was the largest available from the Barbedienne foundry.

Paul Dubois (1829 – 1905)

Having initially studied law with the intention of becoming a barrister, Paul Dubois became attracted to the arts instead, eventually joining Toussaint’s studio ahead of his entry to the École des Beaux-Arts. After his return from a Grand Tour in Italy, he exhibited his ‘Florentine Singer’ at the 1865 Salon to great acclaim. He equally served as curator of the Musée de Luxembourg and as principal of the École Nationale de Beaux-Arts for thirty years (1875-1905).
