Carved from Carrara marble, the life-size bust of the Roman Emperor is set on a socle base.
Italian, circa 1890
Augustus (born 63 B.C.) became the first Emperor of the Roman Empire following the death of his great-uncle Julius Caesar, who had named the young Augustus his heir to the throne. As a masterful statesman and military leader, Augustus would lead the Empire for the next 40 years; he died in 14 AD. Of his capital city, Augustus proclaimed "I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble."
