A Fine Suite of Four Grand Tour Micromosaic Plaques
Each tondo micromosaic is set against a Marmo Nero ground with a malachite reserve, finely inlaid with a view of Vecchia Roma: the Pantheon, the Forum, the Spanish Steps, and St. Peter's Square with the Vatican. The suite is housed in square giltwood frames with stiff leaf carvings and egg-and-dart mouldings.
Italian, Circa 1870
Certainly made in Rome, several versions of these plaques are documented, all housed in frames of the same design. A possible maker is Cesare Roccheggiani, whose workshop's paper label, typically affixed to the back, is often missing.
