A Pair of French Bedside Cabinets
In the Louis XVI Style
A pair of French neoclassical style bedside cabinets constructed from mahogany, enlivened with ebony and decorated with ormolu mounts retaining their original gilding, each surmounted by its original fleur-de-pêcher marble top with a pierced ormolu three-quarter gallery, the frieze enclosing a drawer set with a bacchic ormolu relief of frolicking putti, the white marble-lined cupboards accessed via a single door set with ribbon-tied grapevine swags, supported on tapering fluted legs terminating in ormolu tipped feet and joined by a mahogany undertier.
French, circa 1890
Undoubtedly made by a Paris atelier, these cupboards exemplify the demand for 'haut luxe' furniture in the styles of the ancien regime at the end of the nineteenth century. With their ormolu mounts, use of marble on the outside and on the inside, and combination of mahogany as well as ebony, these bedside tables were likely made by an established workshop such as those of Millet, Sormani, or Giroux.
