A Grand White Marble French Mantle Clock
In the Louis XVI Style

Carved from a single block of marble, the mantel clock of substantial scale resting on gilt bronze oblate feet, the demilune base of the clock carved with lambs tongue motif and a pair of grotesque faces, the enamel dial denoting the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numbers, framed by carved beading, supported by putti to either side and surmounted by a further pair of putti surrounded by cascading garlands of fruit, the striking double fusee movement with a horizontal platform cylinder escapement.
French, circa 1890

While the marble body of the clock was carved in France, the double fusee movement, not requiring a pendulum, was especially imported from England to ensure consistent power was delivered to a clock of this scale, which could not be achieved with simpler French going barrels.
