A Miniature Grandfather Clock
By Dimmer and Son of Chester
Constructed in a flamed mahogany, rising from ogee bracket feet, the base having canted corners adorned with relief carving and echoed on the waist, the door with a shaped top and flanked by canted corners under a hood with free-standing reeded columns, blind fretwork carving and surmounted with a broken swan neck pediment adorned with crisp relief carving. The dial with a brass chapter ring adorned with roman numerals and signed 'Dimmer & Son, Chester', surrounded by engraved arabesque ornament. The weight-driven movement, through an anchor escapement, and striking on a bell.

George Dimmer & Son, retail jewellers and clockmakers since 1878, traded from 20 Eastgate Row in Chester (near Liverpool), a city which has a renowned gold- and silversmithing tradition going back to the 13th century, with Eastgate Row occupying a central role in this trade since 1703.
