Description
A Late Adam Period Work Table
Depicting Venus and Neptune
The slender gilt and white gesso decorated legs supporting a lockable oval tilt-top fitted with a mahogany-lined compartmentalised interior. The glazed top displaying a gouache of the Roman gods, Venus and Neptune, seated in a scallop shell chariot amidst the waves after the original by Francesco Albani (1578 - 1660). A published engraving of similar composition, dated 1796, suggests a revived interest in this subject-and Classical mythology as a whole-at the end of the eighteenth century.
Circa 1790
