A Painted Four-Fold Screen
In the Rococo Manner

Composed of four hand-painted panels on canvas fitted in giltwood frames, the scenes in the manner of Jean-Antoine Watteau, on blue backgrounds, the cartouches populated with draped floral garlands, musical trophies, bacchanalian symbols, and merry figures.
French, circa 1860

The central figures populating each panel are directly inspired by the famous Rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau, who popularised the subject of 'fêtes gallantes' featuring frolicking well-dressed figures. The screen depicts Watteau's "L'Indifférent" of 1717 and "Pierrot", both of which are on display at the Louvre.
