An American Postwar Rosewood Credenza
A cabinet with great presence, the sideboard having a rosewood top with rounded edge, having plain black gloss sides, a chromed recessed plinth below the six rosewood veneered doors, the central cupboard enclosing a single drawer, flanked by shelved cupboards to the sides.
America, circa 1960
Vintage sideboards identical to the present one were retailed by John Stuart, an American who was one of the earliest importers of Danish furniture in North America, establishing his business in 1934. His catalogues contained furniture by the now-famous Finn Juhl, while also commissioning his own modern furniture from American makers such as Mt Airy in North Carolina and Johnson Furniture of Grand Rapids. This credenza is a great example of Stuart’s American output, which he sold from his New York showroom on Park Avenue, which was said to be the first air-conditioned showroom in the USA in 1941.
