The Bed of Roses
By Heinrich Lossow (1843-1897)
Painted in oil on canvas, housed in a giltwood carved frame, signed bottom right.
German, second half of the 19th century
Heinrich Lossow (1843-1897) was a German academically trained painter, today most admired for his opulent painting style and his published illustrations. The son of a sculptor, Lossow trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and embarked on a Grand Tour through France and Italy to refine his style. Lossow's paintings reflect his technical skill in their realism and celebrate his inventiveness in the imagined genre scenes he depicts. He later served as curator at Schlessheim Palace.
