A Pair of Bronze Medici & Borghese Vases
Cast from patinated bronze, both vases of Medici form with twin-handles and fluted socles, one figural relief scene based on the famous Medici Vase, while the other is based on the Borghese vase.
French, circa 1890
The Medici vase, discovered in the 1570s and now in the Uffizi, which inspired one of the friezes and the overall form. This vase has been consistently copied since its excavation and remained a popular reference point in neoclassical decoration well into the Regency period and beyond.
The Borghese vase, now in the Louvre, which provided the model for the Bacchanalian scene on the other frieze.
