A Pair of Louis XV Style Fauteuils à la Reine
In the manner of Jean-Baptiste Tilliard

Constructed from giltwood, with carved details adorning the frame, each armchair designed in the style popularised by Tilliards during the mid-eighteenth century, with cabriole legs to the front and back, the curved seat rail centred by a carved cabochon flanked by acanthus sprays, the padded armrests with scrolled uprights of outward curved shape meeting the slightly reclined back carved with symmetrical rococo ornament including shells, stylised acanthus leaves, and flowers. The original horsehair stuffed upholstery recently recovered.
French, circa 1880

These nineteenth century armchairs pay homage to one of the greatest families of joiners and chairmakers working in Paris during the reign of Louis XV, the Tilliards. One of the hallmarks of theirs are the heart-shaped cabochons, which can be seen carved on the seat rails. The plain backs of the present pair mean they were intended to be arranged against the walls. This kind of furniture was called chaises meublantes (furnishing chairs), as opposed to chaises courantes (running chairs).
