A Pair of Italian Carved Putti
Raised on square egg-and-dart carved plinths, each figure carved from walnut, standing in a contrapossto, clad in togas, one arm raised as they reach for the billowing fold in the fabric.
Italian, late 18th century
Carved figures such as these were produced throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in Italy, in cultural centres of production such as Venice. Stylistically, the plump features, contrapposto stance, and angular folds suggest an 18th century date, before historic romanticism gained popularity in the 19th century with artists such as Besarel & Guggenheim.
