An Unusual Gothic Revival Oak Folio Cabinet
In the manner of Charles Bevan

Designed with beauty and practicality in mind, the free-standing oak cabinet supported on brass castors; each corner with carved columns flanking the panelled front and back decorated with geometric inlays in the style of Charles Bevan and set with brass loop handles, hinged to reveal oak-lined interiors; the sliding top enables a telescoping easel mechanism to rise above the cabinet when in use. Stamped "B. Taylor & Sons / 97 New Bond … London."
English, circa 1870

B. Taylor & Sons (fl.1805-c.1872)

Benjamin Taylor & Sons is recorded at various addresses starting in Southwark in 1805. He is listed at 97 New Bond Street by 1871, and advertises under the same address in 1872 as "cabinet makers, etc" on the occasion of the London International Exhibition. An imposing, 24 foot long, mahogany bookcase with unusual hinging mechanism was delivered by the firm to Moor Place in Hertforshire, where it still stands in the library today.
