Constructed from rosewood veneers and incorporating beveled mirror glass as well as ivory, abalone, mother-of-pearl & pewter inlays; the cabinet rising from oblate bun feet supporting the plinth base below the panelled single door enclosing a double shelved interior and decorated with a central dragon shown in profile surrounded by foliate inlay spandrels and twin-turned columns of conforming inlay; rising above, the frieze incorporating horned masks and a single lockable drawer with floral ribbon-tied swags and supporting the mirror-backed arcade, the upper register having a single arched mirror flanked by turned column supporting the ogee moulded cornice and baluster carved three-quarter gallery. The drawer bearing the retailer's stamp "W.J. Mansell."
French, Circa 1870
Several documented pieces of furniture bear the label of the Chelsea-based "W.J. Mansell," the variety of which include French, English, and Italian antique furniture. As such, the Fulham Road dealer was a retailer of these pieces, and was respected for the excellence and quality of his collection.
