A Substantial William IV Period Dwarf Bookcase
In the Manner of Gillows

Constructed from mahogany with an oak-lined interior, the low bookcase raised on a plinth support, of open design with two central long shelves, flanked by two smaller shelves to either side, all height adjustable, interspersed with pilasters having large carved lotus clasped corbels with acanthus carved ornament beneath the three-quarter galleried top with gadrooned cornice.
English, circa 1835

This low bookcase shares several stylistic similarities with others produced by Gillows and documented in their Estimate Sketch Books held at the Westminster Archives. A design from 1843 has an identical pierced gallery and conforming acanthus-clad scrolling corbels, while swapping out the plinth base for bun feet and replacing the gadroon cornice with a plain edge. Gillows was producing low bookcases of this type throughout the second quarter of the 19th century, with a particularly great early example, dated 1825, featuring a gadrooned base albeit fitted with a superstructure.
