A Magnificent and Imposing
Pair of Porcelain Golden Pheasants
Both expertly modelled en suite in complementary poses, in polychrome hard-paste porcelain, one golden pheasant standing proudly to attention and the other bowed in a low, foraging stance, each figure delicately hand-painted in rich lustrous enamels of golden yellow, emerald green, deep orange-red and violet purple celebrating their intricate feathering and handsome sweeping plumage of their tails. The pheasants on naturalistic foliage-strewn oval bases.
Continental, circa 1900
Sculpting porcelain on this scale required exceptional skill to prevent the heavy clay from warping in the kiln. To capture these brilliant hues, the birds were painted and re-fired multiple times at varying temperatures. This was always a high-risk process where a single mistake could destroy the piece, making this surviving pair a true technical and creative achievement.
