An Exceptional Louis XVI Style
Ormolu-Mounted Console Desserte
Constructed from mahogany and dressed with very fine gilt bronze mounts, the serpentine breakfront table with inverted curved side profile surmounted by a Fleur de Pêcher marble top with moulded edges. Rising from tapering, fluted feet with ormolu sabots, joined together by a large undertier inset with a conforming marble slab and adorned with a pierced gilt brass gallery. The four tapering columnar legs with inlaid filets terminating in scrolled ionic capitals supporting the frieze, which is decorated with intricate gilt-bronze acanthus scrolls, centred by classical mascarons and lyre motifs at the angles, concealing a long central drawer flanked by two pivoting curved side drawers with push-button releases.

A period photograph by Bedford Lemere from 1892 shows the table in the grand staircase at Halton House, which was built and furnished for Alfred de Rothschild around 1883. A later photograph of Exbury House shows the same table used in the Dining Room.
