A Pair of Giltwood Girandoles
In the George III Style
Constructed from giltwood, of contrasting Rococo asymmetrical design, representing architectural capriccios populated by columns, small houses and trees surrounded by foliate C-scrolls and surmounted by Ho-Ho birds. Each issuing two foliate curved candle-arms.
English, circa 1870
These whimsical girandoles, fitted with mirrors to reflect the carved details and the candlelight, are inspired by the famous 18th-century designs of Thomas Chippendale and his contemporary Thomas Johnson, both of whom published books containing drawings of similar girandoles.
