A Late Regency Specimen Marble Top Centre Table
Constructed from mahogany, the table with a tripartite base edged with reeded moulding terminating in boldly sculpted scroll feet with stylised palm leaves and concealed castors, having a conforming three-sided pedestal column with scrolled angles. The table is surmounted by an Italian specimen marble top with radial inlays of over 140 different rare marbles and hardstones, with a lapis lazuli central cabochon, framed within a verde antico marble border.

A similar lapis-centred top, also with verde antico border, is displayed in London's Natural History Museum.
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, wealthy European aristocrats embarking on the Grand Tour collected rare antique marbles and geological samples across Italy, particularly from Roman ruins and Florentine workshops, having them expertly cut and assembled into striking radial tabletops. Like the globes of the era, these marble tops served both as aesthetic works of art and sophisticated scientific showpieces.
