A Pair of Chinese Export 'Famille Rose'
Porcelain Ginger Jars
The porcelain vases and covers decorated in a traditional 'famille rose' colour palette of pinks, blues, yellows, green and turquoise, the baluster bodies hand-painted with Chinese 'scholar's objects' underneath a geometric floral border, the domed covers with conforming decoration.
Chinese, mid-19th century
These porcelain vases feature the classic 'Hundred Antiquities' motif, displaying a collection of traditional Chinese scholar's objects and symbols. These include books, scrolls, incense burners, a table screen, a wrapped guqin, and decorative vessels holding meaningful items like red coral and peacock feathers. Together, this rich decoration represents traditional wishes for scholarly success, wealth, high official rank, and a culturally refined life.
