A Regency Rosewood Parcel Gilt Side Cabinet
Attributed to Gillows
Constructed from figured rosewood with satinwood inlay, the eared rectangular top with an unusual rear overhang, the edges with satinwood crossbanding and surmounted by a three-quarter baluster gallery above an arrangement of four green silk-lined doors with brass grilles enclosing a shelved interior, divided by tapering and gilt-fluted columns terminating in turned legs.
English, circa 1815
Several features of this early 19th century cabinet point to the famous firm of Gillows, who were based in London & Lancaster. The quality of the rosewood timber, in conjunction with the level of craftmanship, seen in the panelled construction, inlay work and fine brassware, are concurrent with company's output. Most notably, the unusual balustrade is encountered consistently on Gillows furniture during the first half of the nineteenth century, as documented by the historian Susan Stuart.
