The Broken Plate
By Fortunato Galli

Carved from alabaster, the bust modelled as a crying child, wearing a bonnet, and holding a broken plate; supported on a circular socle, signed F. Galli.
Italian, circa 1885

Fortunato Galli (1850-1918)

Born in Livorno and active in Florence, Galli was a respected sculptor during the second half of the 19th century. A student of Emilio Zocchi, he was commissioned for large-scale public works throughout the city (such as the cathedral, where his Saint Gregory adorns the facade) alongside his smaller scale work executed for private clients. Working in the same vein as major studios like those of Lapini and Bazzanti, Galli's sculpture often depicts romantic or mythological subjects. He was elected honorary academician in 1885, and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of Paris in 1900.
