A Regency Side Cabinet Attributed to Gillows

Description

A fine regency side cabinet
Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster & London

Constructed from richly coloured mahogany, the breakfront cabinet rising from turned bun feet, supporting the central cupboard opening to reveal an arrangement of sixteen brass-handled drawers, and flanked by a further pair of panelled cupboards revealing stacked sliding trays, the doors interspersed with finely carved pilasters terminating in volutes and paterea along the freeze; the whole surmounted by a pierced ormolu three-quarter gallery.

Provenance

A variation of this cabinet (dated 1812) was supplied by Gillows for the grand library at Tatton Hall, which preserves over 150 marked examples of furniture by the famous cabinetmaker, as well as a large collection of paintings by Canaletto, Poussin, Van Dyck, and Chardin.
