Pair of Obelisks in the Egyptian Manner
By Gouault of Paris

Of antique form, constructed in Algerian Onyx and Portor Marble; rising from a stepped base, having incised hieroglyphics. Signed and dated "Gouault, 1891."
French, 1891

Gouault was a specialist sculptor, and he is recorded as having done much of the carving work when the Tuileries Palace in Paris was joined to the Louvre (between 1857-59), creating a vast complex. His experience there with the arc de triomphe of the Carrousel would have inspired him to create new sculptures such as these obelisks, which use similar materials and incising techniques. Gouault supplied two massive marble columns for an entryway right near this arch, measuring over 10 feet high.
