A Rare Life-Sized Black Forest Stag's Head

Carved from Lindenwood, the deer head with realistic fur effect, patination, and glass inset eyes in conjunction with the real three-tined antlers. Mounted on its original moulded bird finished with roping.
Swiss, circa 1890

The Brienz deer head became immensely desirable at the height of Black Forest production, partly as a result of the widespread passion for hunting. The stag was celebrated as a captivating and beautiful animal throughout the 19th century and was famously depicted by Edwin Landseer in his painting 'The Monarch of the Glen' in 1851.
