A Regency Set of Quartetto Tables
Firmly Attributed to Gillows
Interlocking, and of rectangular form, each table rising from baluster form turned rosewood legs, with stretchers of conforming shape: two tables having inlaid chess board tops, two arranged as side tables, the smallest fitted with a dished tray; specimen woods are used throughout, including burr walnut, burr Canadian maple, satinwood and harewood.
Circa 1820
Thomas Sheraton illustrated a set of quartetto tables in his ‘Cabinet Makers Dictionary’, 1803 edition, describing them as ‘a kind of small work table, made to draw out of each other, and may be used separately and again inclosed within each other when not wanted’.
