A Rare Double-Tiered Satinwood Sutherland Table
Constructed from satinwood, with rosewood crossbanding, the table on double-column end supports with outswept feet, joined by a turned stretcher, having two graduated tiers consisting of drop leaves with canted corners.
English, circa 1870
Distinguished by two hinged flaps supported by gated legs and a stable trestle, the Sutherland table exhibits a gracefully slender central plank atop with elongated flaps that descend nearly to the floor.
The Sutherland table was purportedly crafted in 1822 for Harriet, the Duchess of Sutherland (1806-1861), a close associate of Queen Victoria. Its ingenious design allows for several distinct configurations, rendering it an elegant and versatile addition to the home.
