A Tremendous 'Black Forest' Carved Dog Group
Of Spectacular Size

The largest and most magnificent of its kind, this limewood hand-carved St. Bernard dog group shows the mother couchant and her four playful pups, all with glass inset eyes, a collar around her neck with an expertly carved chain and twist rope.
Swiss, circa 1875

The St. Bernard is undoubtedly the dog most associated with Switzerland, often deemed the national dog. Originally bred for rescue work in the Swiss Alps during the late 17th century, St Bernard's did not receive special training and instead would learn directly from older dogs.

Black Forest carvings of dogs, especially life-sized, are extremely rare. The carving shows how St Bernard dogs looked in the 19th century. As 'working' dogs, they were smaller than today's 'show' St. Bernards.
