Italian, circa 1870
Together with a dark green Antico Verde marble pedestal carved with floral bouquets surrounded by shells and acanthus leaves.
Giuseppe Lazzerini (1831-1895)
G. Lazzerini was an important sculptor from the Carrara area of Italy, where his family had been artists for several generations. As a promising student, he gained a scholarship to Rome where he was able to study the masters of Antiquity. He took over the family studio in Carrara, where he continued to create a wide-ranging array of sculptures for an emerging international clientele. His skill as an artist and success as a sculptor led him to become the Director of the famous Carrara Academy near the end of his life, from 1889 onwards.
