A Magnificent Napoleon III Ormolu Clock Set
By Denière of Paris

A finely modelled, cast and hand-chased bronze three-piece clock set designed in the louis XV rococo style, all with original fire gilded finish, the composition organised around a central clock with Bacchanalian theme celebrating the God of Wine, with a central reclining female figure holding a wine goblet aloft, surrounded by animated putti and trailing grapevine, the enamel circular dial fitted in the case, denoting the hours in Latin numerals and minutes in Arabic numerals within the chapter ring. The pair of candelabra repeating the bacchanalian theme with scrolling bases covered in grapevine surmounted by a putto carrying the curved candlearms each holding nine lights. The dial signed Deniere, A Paris.
French, circa 1870

Denière of Paris

Established in 1804, the firm of Denière produced bronzes of the highest quality throughout the nineteenth century for such distinguished clients as the Prince d'Orange, the Duc d'Orléans, the Grand Duc Alexandre, and the viceroy of Egypt. In 1844 Guillaume Denière inherited the company from his father and established a warehouse/shop at 15, rue Vivienne. In the following decades Guillaume continued in his father's footsteps, winning various prizes for both his work and his role as President of the Réunion des Fabricants, ultimately receiving the Légion d'Honnneur just prior to the 1862 International Exhibition, London.
