An Exceptional Carved Pine Mirror & Console Table
Attributed to Pauly & Co of Venice
Of grand proportions, whimsical design and superior construction, the carved pine mirror and console table designed around a joyful musical theme, having a large, silvered plate within a figurative frame populated with an assortment of winged cherub musicians playing various instruments, a singing trio perched on the top with a conductor to the side and a dancing couple below. The console table with a Carrara marble top above the frieze centred by a carved music trophy, supported on cabriole legs fashioned as carved caryatids of winged figures playing the lyre, the legs joined by a curved X-stretcher surmounted by a couple of cherub musicians.
Italian, circa 1900
Pauly & Co of Venice
While internationally renowned for Venetian glass, Pauly & Co. also operated a premier furniture division in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Billing themselves as a 'Fabrique de Verreries et Meubles Artistiques,' they employed master Venetian woodcarvers to create magnificent Rococo and Renaissance revival pieces for elite Grand Tourists. Though famous today for their whimsical shell-carved 'grotto' furniture, their traditional carved mirrors and consoles demonstrate equally exacting craftsmanship inspired by Art Nouveau and Rococo.
