A Large 'Black Forest' Bear Umbrella Stand
Constructed in a very well-patinated and carved lindenwood, the bear figure, with legs astride on a raised oval platform set with a drip pan, having outstretched arms embracing a large carved branch shaped to hold walking sticks and umbrellas. The bear's face inset with naturalistic glass eyes and refined with monochromatic patination.
Brienz area, circa 1890
The present version is noteworthy for its size, naturalism, and expert carving.
Brienz, in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland was remarked upon in Baedeker's Travel Guide, as having a population of 2400, of whom 600 persons were employed as woodcarvers, to supply the tourist trade to Switzerland with mementos of the tour. A museum devoted entirely to the art of wood carving may be visited today.
