A Magnificent Pair of George II Style
Walnut & Parcel Gilt Armchairs
Of exceptional grand scale and beautifully conceived design, carved from solid walnut and supported on cabriole legs highlighted with relief carving of acanthus scrolls and foliage, terminating in lion's paw feet; the sprung seat and domed rectangular backrest issuing outcurved armrests with shaped downward supports; upholstered in leather and velvet.
English, circa 1900
The design for these impressive armchairs is related to some of the most important commissions of the mid-18th century, including a set of chairs delivered to Chatsworth House as well as an important set commissioned for Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire. Their design exemplifies the prevalent taste of the George II period, with their finely modelled lion-paw feet, scrolled acanthus leaves and C-scrolls ornamenting the strongly conceived frame.
